Kopiowanie plików / Copying files
#2
Copying files

Total Commander allows user to use easy copy operations.

1. Copying between folders.

By default the copy operation is called by using F5 key or "F5 Copy" button on the bottom application's bar. Copying is possible via dragging selected files to the opposite panel or the tab placed on the top part of the panel.

Dragging file on the folder will always copy it into specified directory.

There is a possibility to copy file by using "Copy" and "Paste" functions available from long pressed RMB menu or by using "Menu" key on the keyboard (placed between Windows and Ctrl keys). Using Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V keys combinations will have the same effect as these described above.

2. Copying between files.

Dragging / copying selected file to compressed one (e.g. zip, rar) or to the panel which shows the content of these, will always show "Pack files" dialog. Copying from archive's content will always show "Unpack files" dialog.
These windows will be described later.

3. Copying inside one folder.

You can multiply the file inside one folder by using:
  1. Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V key shortcuts (or appropriate options from RMB) - file will be copied with "Copy of " file name's prefix added,
  2. F5 key (or proper bottom bar button) - copying dialog will be visible, you should write new file name into it (clearing out the path string),
  3. Shift+F5 key shortcut - simpler copy dialog will be shown giving the possibility to write file's name only.

4. Copy dialog.

Copy dialog allows you to choose target path (by default it is opposite panel's folder).
You have two possibilities to change this behaviour: you can write new path by a hand or use "Tree" button. This button will show you new window with folders tree allocated on the same drive as the opposite panel is placed in. Using "Quick search" field and up/down arrows, you can easily choose needed target folder. If you want to see folders tree belonging to the other drive, you should write needed drive letter inside "Copy <filename> to" field before choosing "Tree" button. You can observe that Shift+F5 window gives you the possibility to browse through folders tree too.

5. Advanced options.

a) Queue

Copy dialog gives you the possibility to put copied files into queue. Thanks that it is possible to use less system resources (e.g. during copy from CD) during whole process.

b) Additional settings

By using "Options" button you can automize copying process.

There are several available options for this:
- Ask user - you will be asked to choose an action and confirm copying for each problematic file,
- Overwrite all - all target files will be overwritten in the case of problems (e.g. same names),
- Skip all - problematic files will not be copied,
- Overwrite all older - in the case of target files with the same name as the source ones, only older ones will be overwritten,
- Auto-rename... - source or target files names will be changed automatically,

c) Filtering

Using "Only files of this type" field will allow you to choose which from selected files you would like to copy. TC UP has some predefined filter for the most often used types of files. Selecting all files from some folder, using Copy (F5) operation, and choosing "Muzyka", will copy only audio files leaving the rest alone.

You can always use your own filters using this recommendations:
*.bmp *.jpg - will copy only images with BMP and JPG extension (space between extensions!)
*.* | *.exe - will copy all files except EXE ones
*.* | sialala\ - will copy all except SIALALA folder

6. Other - [Advanced users].

There is the possibility to change copy operation's behaviour via editing [Configuration] section in the wincmd.ini file.
Code:
AlwaysCopyInBackground=X
where X:
0 - no background copy
1 - TC will always copy in background
2 - TC will always use background copy manager

You can make copy quicker if you switch off target path free space checking:
Code:
SizeCheck=X
where X:
0 - off
1 - on

It is recommended to define which partitions belongs to the same physical drive.
For proper set up you should navigate:
menu Configuration -> Copy/delete.
In the right part of the window you should write the proper values into "The following drive letters are on the same physical harddisk" field.

Example:
I have two partitions C and D on the same drive, E and F partitions on the other.
So my settings should looks like:
