Backup Profile - bonzai10 - 09-13-2007

How can i backup my profile ?
Every time i upgrade TC UP i have to re-edit ini files or overwrite them to keep my old UP preferences.

RE: Backup Profile - ULTIMA PRIME - 09-13-2007

Just copy this files:

From TC UP directory: wincmd.ini, DEFAULT.bar, color.ini

and if you use programs from TC UP:

From PLUGINS directory:

%COMMANDER_PATH%\PLUGINS\Media\MirandaIM\Profiles\ultima.dat (or if you have - your own profile)

%COMMANDER_PATH%\PLUGINS\Media\OperaUSB\profile

In all new version TC UP i change wincmd.ini - so if you backup your file - propably you dont have new function

Yes, there was a plan to make TC UP upgrade only, and don't overwrite configuration files, but it needs very much work with ini files, so ULTIMA would have to work a few days on them, because currently it uses files, that the installer copies to their places.
We need only the different entries in ini files, not the whole thing, so it needs very much work (just think how many files TC UP has), and it needs a program (or dll, but program is better) to modify files to work with the new release(s). This means that we could have a possibility to choose what plugins to install (like we can in TC PowerPack... but UP is still better). And we could change the language settings of all plugins and programs that way in run-time.

PS: But we sure can't expect ULTIMA to do it by himself, and for free.Big Grin

I don't even mind application profiles but the main profile (the ini files) TC UP has...

Usually i overwrite the %COMMANDER_PATH%\Config and %COMMANDER_PATH%\wincmd.ini.
Once I tried to keep my configuration from older version to latest by retyping some values, and i saw that the configuration files are completely different - sections are in different lines. This takes a lot of time.

I know that overwriting all *.ini files is not the best idea (some features might be missing ?) but at least for now it works for me,
I need only basic configuration to be preserved - everything that is in configuration menu: tabs, colours, last location, icons!(those original are too plain for me)

Sorry for grammar and spelling, sometimes I don't even check what i wrote and i have to edit posts few times.

RE: Backup Profile - [HUN]Peti - 09-13-2007

Sure you miss features, ULTIMA always changes that file, especially when he adds plugins. We are thinking about a new upgrading system in the installer, but you'll have to wait for it for a while.Big Grin
This ini replacing is ok now, but when TC UP will use the wbx plugin interface and will include the online checker plugin (what I'm making now) the TC UP will ask you to download the newest version every time you start it.Big Grin

I have a suggestion,
I don't know much about scripting but You could make a script that compares ini files from older version to newer and adds only new lines/features... for example it will add only new plugins or will replace old one with new to older ini file.

Yes, this is planned.
It's quite a lot of work though...

RE: Backup Profile - [HUN]Peti - 09-17-2007

Ah, yes. This was the plan, but think about it:
What is adding only the necessary things?
It needs someone who creates scripts (or rather ini files) to add to the original ones, after checking version number. It isn't impossible, but it's hard to do from InnoSetup (ULTIMA wants to use it), and even from a different program, it is hard to do, we suspended this plan. Though it may be int TC UP 6.0.Wink

Anyone could write an automated script for this? it would be more convenient.

There is a possibility to backup bookmark list (under CTRL+D)?
